When to Schedule a Fertility Assessment
Official recommendations from The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM)* indicate that you should schedule a fertility assessment if:
- You’ve been trying to get pregnant for 12 months or longer without success
- You’re over 35 and have been trying for 6 months or more
- You’ve experienced multiple miscarriages or stillbirths
- You have irregular periods, pelvic pain, or other reproductive health concerns
Meeting with your provider early allows time to identify any contributing factors, begin testing, and explore treatment options.
What Happens During a Fertility Assessment
Your fertility assessment starts with a detailed conversation about your medical history, lifestyle, and reproductive goals. Both partners may be included in the evaluation process, since infertility can affect all genders.
Your provider may recommend one or more diagnostic tests, such as:
- Blood tests to evaluate hormone levels (including FSH, AMH, and thyroid hormones)
- Transvaginal ultrasound to assess the ovaries and uterus
- Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) to check if the fallopian tubes are open
- Semen analysis for the male partner to assess sperm count and movement
- Ovarian reserve testing to measure egg quantity and quality
Some tests can be performed at our practice while others may require a referral to a fertility specialist.
Understanding Your Results
Once testing is complete, your provider will review the findings and discuss next steps. You’ll receive clear guidance on:
- Any factors that may be affecting fertility
- Recommended treatment options
- Lifestyle changes or supplements that may improve outcomes
- When to consider referral to a fertility specialist or reproductive endocrinologist

FAQs
Is fertility testing only for women?
No. Fertility is a shared issue, and both partners may undergo testing. A semen analysis is often one of the first and simplest evaluations performed.
How long does a fertility assessment take?
Initial testing and consultations may take a few weeks. Once results are available, your provider will review them and outline a treatment plan based on your goals and timeline.
Does a fertility assessment mean I’ll need fertility treatment?
Not necessarily. Many patients discover correctable issues or receive lifestyle and timing recommendations that improve natural conception rates before any treatment is needed.
