When to Begin Gynecologic Care

For most patients, gynecology visits begin between ages 15 and 20, or earlier if menstrual issues or other symptoms arise. Early visits are an opportunity to:

  • Build trust with your provider
  • Learn about puberty and menstrual cycles
  • Ask questions about reproductive health
  • Establish a baseline for future care

As you move into adulthood, annual well-woman exams become a key part of preventive care, helping your provider detect changes early and support your long-term health.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Your visit is designed to make you feel comfortable, informed, and respected. Appointments may include:

  • A discussion about your medical history and any symptoms
  • A physical or pelvic exam (if recommended)
  • Screenings as needed such as Pap tests, HPV tests, or breast exams
  • Conversations about contraception, sexual health, or pregnancy planning

Our team focuses on open communication and personalized guidance, so you can make confident choices about your care.

FAQs

How often should I see my gynecologist?

We follow the recommendation from the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists (ACOG). ACOG recommends having well-woman exam every year.* Your provider may recommend additional visits based on your age, health history, or if you experience symptoms such as irregular bleeding, pelvic pain, or changes in your cycle.

Can my gynecologist and primary care provider coordinate my care?

Yes. Because UWH of Pennsylvania includes both women’s health and primary care services, your providers can easily share information and collaborate on your overall health plan—offering true continuity of care across specialties.

What should I bring to my first gynecology visit?

Bring a list of any medications you take, details about your menstrual cycle, and any health concerns or questions you’d like to discuss. This helps your provider tailor your visit and create a personalized care plan.
